Acne Treatment
Acne is a common skin disorder affecting millions of people. It is caused by clogged or plugged pores, pimples or cysts. The level of acne can range from mild to severe. Many factors may contribute to this condition such as hormones, stress, genetics, diet and the environment. It can show up not only on the face, but also on the neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. Moderate to severe types of acne can even lead to scarring.
Several methods are available to treat all levels of acne. Non prescription or over the counter medications are available for mild to moderate cases. These usually include lotions or creams with a salicylic acid or benzyl peroxide in them to dry up the oils that can lead to the clogged pores or pimples. Prescription antibiotics are available from a physician for either topical or oral medication such as antibiotics or hormones. Often combination therapy of both topical and oral medication is prescribed and can be most effective.
Severe acne can require the use of an oral medication called Accutane. While very effective in controlling the problem, this medication can have severe side effects. Your dermatologist will be able to assist you in determining if this is the right plan of action for you. Additional management for acne can include lasers for reducing the oils produced by the skin or lasers to resurface the skin for pitting or scars such as the Candela Smoothbeam or the Clearlight.
Not every treatment is right for every person and one should consult their dermatologist to find out which treatment regime would benefit them best.
