Cosmetic Contouring
Many of us are not happy with our smiles and because of this we look to treatments and procedures that can help; one of these procedures is Cosmetic Contouring. Cosmetic Contouring is a revolutionary procedure that changes the shape of the teeth for a better smile. Many individuals find themselves with a smile that consists of teeth that are crooked, chipped, cracked and/or overlapping. Tooth reshaping or contouring is a very quick procedure (patients only need visit for one session) that can correct any imperfections of the teeth.
The most common ailments treated with Cosmetic Contouring are overlapping of the front teeth, slight rotation of the front teeth, uneven wear, chips, cracks and teeth that don't have their biting and incising edges in harmony. The treatment is a great substitute for braces (under certain circumstances); it is a procedure that can help to make subtle changes to the smile. A few millimeters of reduction and a few millimeters of tooth-colored laminate can create a beautiful smile with minimal discomfort to the patient. Cosmetic Contouring is best used for altering the length, shape or position of your teeth.
During the procedure, your cosmetic dentist will assess the areas of your smile that need work. X-rays will then be taken to evaluate the size and location of the pulp of each tooth to ensure there is enough bone between each tooth to support it. After this, your dentist will mark your teeth to guide him/her in re-shaping the teeth. A sanding drill or laser will then be used to gradually remove small amounts of surface enamel after which abrasive strips will then be moved back and forth between your teeth to shape the actual sides of your teeth. At the end of this portion of the treatment, the teeth are smoothed and polished.
Once the teeth are properly shaped, tooth-colored laminate (veneers) will then be applied to create a natural look and a beautiful smile. The Veneers will be glued over the front of your teeth to fill in any gaps that may have resulted from the contouring.
