Diode

Of the many different types of lasers available for cosmetic purposes the diode laser is very effective for permanent hair reduction.  Lasers have redefined how physicians treat their patients from removing dark pigmented areas, to leg veins to unwanted hair.  They have revolutionized all fields of medicine, especially dermatology and cosmetic surgery.  The diode laser is no exception to this.  A diode lasers uses 810nm of light to go below the surface of the skin treating unwanted hair as well as lentigines and spider veins.

Often considered one of the “gold standards” in laser hair removal the diode can safely and effectively treat all skin types including tanned skin.  The LightSheer diode laser system manufactured by Lumenis is the most familiar for this family of lasers.  In the instance of hair removal the diode laser works by selectively heating hairs to the point of destruction, preferably dark hair, while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding skin.   The ideal candidate for laser hair removal is light skin and dark hair.  The diode laser is programmed to destroy melanin (the substance that gives hair its color) in the currently active hair follicles.  The benefit of the laser treatments is they are fast and effective.  Side effects and possible complications of laser hair removal include hyper/hypo-pigmentation, redness, swelling, blisters or scars.  Most people need 3-8 treatments scheduled 4-12 weeks apart.  Some may need a “touch up” periodically after the initial treatments.
