Ear Surgery

The size and shape of our ears is determined largely by genetics and because of this, Ear Surgery has been developed to help those individuals who have cosmetic or medical problems with their ears.  We’ve all heard the phrase, “he or she will eventually grow into his/her ears” but we all know that that isn’t always the case.  Ear surgery or Otoplasty is the surgical procedure to set prominent ears closer to the head or to reduce or reshape overly large ears for cosmetic reasons. Sometimes this procedure is referred to as ear pinning.  Ears are one of the most prominent facial features.  Adults and children who suffer from large or abnormally shaped ears often have associated embarrassment, ridicule, low self esteem and confidence issues.  The benefit of Otoplasty is both physical and emotional.

The majority of ear surgery patients are children between the ages of 4 and 14.  Ears are fully formed by the age of 4 and parents tend to opt for this surgery early to avert teasing and embarrassment by others as their child grows.   Adults who suffer from large protruding ears are also excellent candidates for this procedure.  The surgery involves an incision being made behind the ear.  A vertical piece of cartilage is removed, within the natural ear fold, leaving a hidden scar.  If the ear is abnormally formed, extra surgical work is involved to reconstruct the ear and more than one surgery is likely to be needed.

There are few risks associated with this surgery, however all surgical procedures have risks and complications.  The procedure can be done by an oral/ maxillofacial, plastic s or Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgical specialists.   The average cost for Otoplasty can range from $2000 to $5000.
