Injectables

Injectibles are liquids or gels introduced into the skin to relax, fill or eradicate a specific area. These include a variety of substances that are injected into the skin to alleviate many cosmetic problems. The majority of these are dermal fillers.

Dermal fillers are injected under the skin to produce a plumping effect to the treated area in an attempt to return the skin to its younger looking self. Fillers can be made of a variety of different materials from bovine collagen, to human collagen to hyaluronic acid which is naturally occurring in human tissue. Synthetic fillers are also available along with combinations of the different materials. For example ArteFill is a combination of bovine collagen and synthetic polymethylmethacrulate. Fillers are easy to treat with and generally have a long lasting effect from 3 months to several years.

BOTOX® is an injectable, not a filler. BOTOX® is used to relax the forehead and periorbital (around the eye) muscles, eliminating the opportunity for those muscles to contract. This inability makes it unlikely for the skin to repeat the motions that cause a wrinkle or fold in the skin. The surface of the skin appears smooth and makes the wrinkles appear less visible. Sclerosing solutions may also be considered an injectable.

Sclerosing solutions are used for the elimination of unwanted spider and small varicose veins. The solution is an irritant injected into the veins. The mixture aggravates the lumen or inside of the vein, triggering it to swell. The swelling then causes the blood to be pushed out. Given that there is nothing to keep this vein open after treatment, the body reabsorbs the vein, thereby making it disappear.
