Juvederm
Compounds injected into and under the skin surface to fill in wrinkles, lines, scars or plump lips are known as dermal fillers. This procedure is used to assist in reversing the effects of aging by returning the skin surface to its more youthful state. Juvederm is the gel form dermal filler manufactured by Allergan, the makers of BOTOX cosmetic. Made with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the human body, Juvederm is used to correct scars, smooth out wrinkles, augment lips and lip borders. It is also the first FDA approved filler proven safe for people of color. Juvederm works to instantly re-establish volume and decrease and smooth wrinkles and creases by injections under the skin in the mid to deep dermis. The health care provider uses a very fine needle and inserts it under the skin and the gel is then injected into the lines or lips causing the area to be plumped and ‘filled in’. Once in the skin the results will last for a significant period of time. The actual procedure time can take from 10-60 minutes depending on the tolerance of the patient and the amount of correction needed. Some patients require a topical anesthetic applied to their skin prior to the treatment for more comfort.
Side effects include bruising, redness, swelling and pain at injection and are usually relieved within 7 days. Over time this dermal filler is reabsorbed by the body, but is reported to last up to 12 months. The average cost for Juvederm is between $350 - $400 per 1cc syringe. |
