Liposuction
Liposuction is the surgical form of body contouring accomplished by removing fat from the body through vacuum suction. This procedure is also known as lipoplasty, liposculpture and lipectomy. Lipoplasty is the number one cosmetic surgical procedure. Fat deposits are most often found on hips, abdomen, thighs, knees, chin and flanks (or love handles) on both men and women. Liposuction to remove these fatty deposits is accomplished using a hollow tube like instrument called a cannula, which is inserted under the skin and then the surgeon manually moves back and forth to break up fat and then suction it out of the body. It can be done under local anesthesia, IV sedation or general anesthesia. Liposuction can also be done in combination with other cosmetic procedures such as the tummy tuck or facelift. The types of liposuction available are tumescent, ultrasonic, and laser assisted liposuction.
The tumescent liposuction is a mixture saline, anesthetic and epinephrine injected into the fatty areas. This causes the area to swell making the breaking up and suctioning of the fat easier. The epinephrine in the solution decreases blood flow, thereby limiting the amount of bleeding. The anesthetic portion also decreases the pain experienced by the patient.
Ultrasonic liposuction is accomplished using the tumescent technique for the larger areas and then high pitched sound waves of heat liquefy the fat making for easier removal, especially in hard to treat areas. This technique is very effective for those who require a more precise application for contouring specific areas of the body. Because a significant amount of heat is generated with the use of this technique, the risk of burns, blisters and possible scars increases.
Laser assisted liposuction or laser lipolysis is the newest technology to remove unwanted fat. Laser lights breaks up and liquefies the fat for an even more efficient way to remove unwanted fatty deposits in especially hard to treat areas. This procedure is quicker than traditional liposuction and boasts shorter recovery times. As with any surgical procedure, a consultation with your certified cosmetic surgeon will be able to answer all of your questions regarding liposuction. |
