Mastoplexy

A breast lift or mastopexy is the surgical procedure to raise and firm the breast by removing excess skin, reshaping and tightening the surrounding tissue.  Childbirth, weight loss and aging lead to a depletion of tissue volume and loss of skin elasticity which in turn causes sagging or drooping breasts.  This is also referred to as breast ptosis.  When this type of change occurs in the breasts, some women wish to return their body to a more youthful appearance.  The breast lift may be the surgical answer to eliminate the sagging.    A breast lift can be done alone, or in conjunction with implants for those who want to increase their breast size.

The surgical procedure can be performed under twilight or general anesthesia on an outpatient basis.  Depending on the amount of ptosis to be corrected and whether or not augmentation will be done will determine the actual surgical time for the operation.  To achieve the lift, the surgeon elevates the breast on the chest wall and repositions the nipple and areola.  Breast lift surgery has three basic techniques; the concentric or donut lift, the vertical mastopexy and the anchor or keyhole mastopexy.

The concentric lift involves making circular incisions around the areola and nipple, removing skin and moving the areola upward on the chest.  This technique is beneficial for women with minimal sagging and smaller breasts.  With the vertical mastopexy incisions are made around the areola and down the center of the breast to the crease by the chest.  This allows for more correction and lift for those with more sagging and breast tissue.

The anchor or keyhole lift is the most common and also the most invasive.  Incisions are made in the shape of a keyhole, tissue is removed and the nipple and areola are repositioned higher on the chest wall.  When closed the suture line looks similar to an anchor with a vertical line down the center of the breast and a horizontal line in the crease of the breast.  This technique is often used for breast reduction as well.

Risks associated with breast lift surgery include reaction to anesthesia, infection, asymmetry, persistent numbness of nipple tissue, scarring, nerve damage and skin discoloration.  Costs for mastopexy can range from $4000 and up.
