Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is the non invasive gentle technique of removing the top dead layer of skin. Medical offices and day or medical spas, will perform this technique, although recent products are now also available for in home use. The gentle mechanical abrasion is done with pressure, crystals and suction to scrape the upper dead skin layer away, helping to remove sun damage, lessen pigmentation, soften scars and diminish fine lines and wrinkles. In traditional microdermabrasion, crystals such as zinc, sodium or aluminum are passed through a wand which is drawn over the face with light pressure. Similar to the method of dermabrasion, microdermabrasion is safe and gentle enough to do once a week. The treatment enhances surface skin cell turn over, leaving skin visibly and touchably smoother, brighter and more refreshed looking. Multiple treatments will reduce pores, erase fine line, decrease stretch marks and age spots. Microdermabrasion assists collagen and elastin fibers to rebuild and regenerate.
Different varieties of microdermabrasion include: Crystal microdermabrasion relies on crystals blasted on the skin to exfoliate the top layer of tissue. Diamond microdermabrasion operates without crystals and the exfoliation is based on the tip of the want making contact with the skin and the dead cells are removed with vacuum suction. The home microdermabrasions are not as powerful as the medical and spa versions, but can produce good results over time.
The procedure is quick, painless and requires no downtime. Make up can be applied immediately afterward. The removal of the top layer of skin immediately restores the natural glow of skin. Often this treatment can be as effective as some of the laser and surgical procedures for simple skin imperfections, however it takes several treatments to see dramatic changes. The entire process can take from 10-45 minutes. Initial treatment plans require 10-12 sessions spaced 1-2 weeks apart and then a maintenance plan of once per month or every other month. Nationally the cost for individual treatments can range from $75 - $250. |
