Rhinoplasty
The surgical procedure to reshape the nose to improve function, appearance or both is called Rhinoplasty. Often done for cosmetic reasons, this surgery is also performed to correct defects in the structure of the nose that may cause breathing difficulties. The goals of nose surgery are to reconstruct the frame work of the nose to appear more natural, function properly and bring balance to other facial features. This is accomplished by working with cartilage and bone to make the nose larger, thinner, straighter, smaller or shorter. Sometimes the surgeon will take cartilage from another part of the body, such as a rib or the ear to strengthen or change the structure of the nose.
With rhinoplasty there are two types: Open and closed. An open rhinoplasty has incisions on the outside of the nose. It is for major nose reshaping and incisions are made in a vertical strip separating the nostrils. More complicated cases usually require an open rhinoplasty. A closed rhinoplasty has incisions made inside the nose. It is generally for minor reshaping. Recovery time from a closed rhinoplasty is usually quicker.
Nose surgeries can be done with either local or general anesthesia, depending on the severity of the case. Recovery time is a minimum of 1-2 weeks. There is often bruising around the eyes that can last up to 2 weeks. Side effects and complications from this procedure include bleeding, scars, broken capillaries, infection, nasal obstruction, adhesions, and septal perforation. As the nose heals minor subtle shifting and settling may occur up a year after the procedure. This surgery can also be combined with a mentoplasty (chin augmentation) to balance out the face. Costs for a Rhinoplasty can range from $4000- $12000. As with any surgery, consult with a surgeon who is certified to perform rhinoplasty to discuss your options. |
