Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone Breast Implants are one option for women undergoing breast augmentation. Breast augmentation is an innovative procedure that can help women to achieve the breast shape and size they desire. While breast size can change due to factors such as pregnancy, illness, weight gain and weight loss, genetics is the largest factor that determines the size of our breasts. Sometimes, women are unhappy with the size and shape they currently have, but augmentation procedures make it possible to alter breast size for a more comfortable, natural look.
The augmentation procedure involves the implantation of a prosthesis in the breast area for a fuller, shapelier breast. As technology has advanced, women have had more options because different shapes have become available—anatomic, teardrop or round—therefore women can choose exactly how they want their breasts to look and the surgery can be customized accordingly. While there are some experimental fillers used for the augmentation procedure, saline implants are used almost exclusively because over the past 20 years they have proven to be the best choice. However, many women have also opted to use Silicone Breast Implants for their implant procedure.
The reason that Silicone Breast Implants are not used as much as saline implants is because their safety has been a hot debate for years. While there is no evidence that a ruptured silicone implant can cause long-term health problems, when compared to saline implants, more women have had problems with silicone. When a foreign material is placed inside your body, such as an implant, the body’s natural reaction is to form scar tissue around it. If the scar tissue remains soft, it will not cause you any problems. However, if an implant leaks or ruptures, the body will form hardened scar tissue around the rupture which can lead to pain and disfigurement.
As technology has progressed, Silicone Breast Implants have become safer but most still prefer its saline counterpart. Breast augmentation is a very involved surgical procedure that requires a lot of downtime; most patients don’t want to have to think about undergoing it again to remove a ruptured implant. When undergoing breast augmentation, it is important to discuss all of your implant options with your doctor in order to choose the one that is right for you. |
