Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Wisdom teeth today are viewed as useless teeth that are often subcommand to Wisdom Teeth Extraction. During the stone age when our ancestors walked the earth, their diet consisted of rough, course meat and grains that were oftentimes difficult to chew and thus required a stronger jaw bone and extra teeth. Today, the food we ingest is processed in a way that we do not need the extra teeth to chew; in fact, some of us are even evolving because of this fact: babies are now being born with smaller jaws and sometimes without any wisdom teeth at all.
For those of us who do have wisdom teeth, they can go one of two ways. Wisdom teeth will either grow in normally and never give you any problems or they will cause a lot of pain and end up having to be removed. If this is the case, you’ll have to endure Wisdom Teeth Extraction because having these teeth removed is the only way to permanently relieve painful symptoms. Although antibiotics can provide you with temporary relief, the symptoms tend to continually flare up.
Depending on the severity of your case, you’ll have your wisdom teeth removed under either a local or a general anesthesia. Once the anesthetic has taken effect, the operation can begin. The procedure will start with a cut in the gum over the wisdom tooth in order to then remove some bone so that the tooth can be lifted out. Once the tooth is removed, the gum will be stitched back together to help promote healing. Patient will almost always feel pain and discomfort following the treatment; the jaw bone will most likely be stiff and sore, but medication can be taken to relieve discomfort. This is an outpatient procedure so patients can return home directly following treatment; those put under general anesthesia should have a ride home however.
Most patients experience no problems following Wisdom Teeth Extraction, however, contact your dentist or the hospital immediately if you develop any of the following side effects. Bleeding that doesn't stop after applying pressure, or that lasts for more than half an hour, difficulty breathing, continued swelling that lasts more than three days after the operation, a fever and severe pain that is not relieved by painkillers are all symptoms that could indicate that your gums are not healing properly. Get checked out immediately if any of these problems persist. Wisdom Teeth Extraction is a very common and relatively straightforward procedure. For those suffering with continual discomfort from wisdom teeth, having them taken out will allow you to return to your normal lifestyle. |
